Listening. It is a disappearing art, and its absence is causing the stress levels in our country to skyrocket. Listening is so important.

Listening does not mean “not talking while someone else is”. Ever seen a 6-year old during a church sermon? They might not be talking, but they are probably not listening.

Listening does not mean hearing the words someone is saying and thinking about your response so you’re ready to tell them how it is the moment they stop talking.

Listening is active. You hear the words. You see the expressions. You feel the emotions. You seek to understand. That’s the key. Listen to understand, not to respond. (Stephen Covey talks about this beautifully in his book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”)
Try it out. It may be difficult at first, but it will open you up to stronger, better relationships.
